How to choose your first hookah
Choosing your first hookah does not mean studying dozens of specs. It is enough to understand what each part does and where it is worth not cutting corners.
What a hookah is made of

| Base | The water vessel that cools the smoke. Stability is what matters most. |

| Bowl | Holds the tobacco. Its material and shape affect flavour and heat handling. |
| Heat management device (HMD) or foil | Separates the coals from the tobacco and helps control the temperature. |
Stem: material and draw
Most stems are stainless steel. It is durable, easy to clean and does not hold odours. Cheaper stems made of other metals or with decorative coatings can corrode over time and are harder to clean.
The draw — how light or tight it feels to pull through the hookah — is a matter of habit. To start, a stem with a medium, smooth draw that comes apart easily for cleaning is a good choice.
Base: stability first
The base should have a wide bottom and a low centre of gravity so the hookah does not tip over. With glass bases, thicker glass is worth it. Shape and colour are a matter of taste.
Hose: where not to save
Silicone hoses are the most practical: you can rinse them with water and they do not pick up the taste of the previous tobacco. Traditional fabric hoses cannot be washed and absorb smells over time. The hose needs a mouthpiece — metal or wooden, whatever feels better in your hand.
Bowl and heat management
For beginners the easiest set-up is a clay or ceramic bowl with a heat management device (HMD). The HMD keeps the coals in one place and you control the temperature by moving the coals or opening and closing the lid — no poking holes in foil.
